Getting Up to Speed on Racing

Earlier this week, my colleagues and I met with the two groups under consideration by Ada County to lease the horse racing facilities at Les Bois Park. We were encouraged by what we heard. Although it will take a little while longer to get details worked out and a lease in place, it looks very promising that we will be able to have at least an abbreviated racing season at the track this year. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work through the rest of this process.

Sounds very positive except for the fact that it is a little late this season for the horsemen who earn their living in this business. If you are really trying to save racing in Idaho, please consider extending the lease to at least five years. I am really tired of driving to Pocatello just to have the races canceled once again because the track is too muddy. Racing and summer go hand in hand and even though it's not officially summer... without racing it will be a very long boring one.

The lease will cover the remainder of this year, plus next year through the end of Ada County's fiscal year, September 30, 2010. It will be renewable for additional one-year periods through September 30, 2013, for up to a total of five years, with the approval of both parties. That structure provides an "out" for either party, should the arrangement not be working well, but also allows for greater longevity, if things are galloping along nicely for everyone.

Any more updates on what is happening to get horseracing back at Les Bois Park?

Ada County is in the process of negotiating with both proposers to work out terms for a lease agreement.
